Boys and Girls High School Showcase and Evaluation

This event will be a series of control scrimmages where players will be evaluated and rated to determine areas of their game that need improvement. The overall evaluation will give players an accurate "snapshot" of their skills. During the showcase, players will also be put through drills and conditioning that reflects what they will see at the collegiate level.

Each player will receive a complete evaluation report including: a scouting report, a strength and weakness analysis, a physical testing assessment and detailed information on "Getting to the Next Level", which answers questions on how to be ready to play at the college level.

This event will be a day and a half of hard work to show players what they need to do to be ready. The event starts with a 60 minute seminar from Coach and NCAA expert, Barry Mestel of Winning Ways Pro International (assisted by Coach Lisa Wilson & Coach Tom Newell).

This seminar will explore:

  • NCAA rules and regulations
  • How to maximize athlete's exposure
  • Parents' role in recruiting process
  • Sources for financial assistance
  • Tips on selecting the right school and basketball program
  • What today's college coaches are really looking for
  • Q & A Session

For the girls, this will be a NCAA Certified Event.

Tom Newell
NBA, WNBA, & International Basketball Coach

Coach Tom Newell runs basketball camps for kids around the globe and has helped positively impact thousands of people's lives. Newell has spent the past 21 years in the highest levels of professional and international basketball programs.

Formerly the Head Coach of the Japan National Men's Team and President of the Coaches Who Care Intl. Youth Coaches Certification program, Newell is also working on his second book, having already co-authored "Basketball Post" with his father, legendary coach Pete Newell

Newell began his professional career in 1980 as an east coast scout for the Golden State Warriors. In 1984, he moved to Indiana to become the Director of Player Personnel for the Pacers. After two years in Indiana, Newell moved to the bench as an assistant coach with the Seattle Sonics. From 1990-1997, Newell worked with the New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks while also for the first time entering the realm of international basketball. In 1995, Newell became head coach of the Greek professional team Iraklis, then in 1997 began working for the United States Basketball Academy as Director of International Clinics in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Coach Newell was also an assistant coach for the WNBA's Portland Fire.

Tom Newell was the first NBA coach to coach a Chinese Basketball Association team, the Jilin Northeast Tigers in 2007-2008

Since Newell began his work with international programs, much of his time and focus has continued in the area of basketball fundamentals and curriculum both in the United States and abroad. In addition to his coordination of basketball camps and clinics throughout Asia, he has also developed videos, publications, and programs that have focused on youth participation in basketball, teaching young people, parents, and coaches the necessary skills to be a successful participant in the game. He runs non-profit organization, Coaches Who Care, Intl. It is specifically designed to assist volunteer coaches at every level with a proper teaching model and participant/player development programs that will enable coaches and kids alike to have a positive experience with youth sports.

Coach Newell also is the Director of the New Balance/Best Effort Camps and Clinics program in Seattle, Washington, and Clackamas, Oregon. These camps for kids are free, and provide a wonderful template on life skills and discipline each summer. Last year's theme was: "Let's Cease to be Obese", following the previous summer's engagement: "Eat Right to Play Right". The ages of the participants is between 7-17. New Balance shoes has been a strong advocate of this community awareness project, and without their support to Coach Newell's programs, the success and fun each child has would be lost. Coach Newell also provides Volunteer Youth Coaches training clinics and parent symposiums throughout the Puget Sound area of Washington State.

Coach Newell now resides in the Seattle area with his wife Elaine. He has three children Ashleigh, Chris, and Paige.
